An Employee Promotion

A promotion is the advancement of an individual from one job position to another job position in an organization that has a higher income range, a higher level job title, and, frequently, more and higher-level job requirements. When an employee is promoted, he or she may be given the responsibility of managing or monitoring the work of other employees. Promotion also generally increases decision-making responsibility (Heathfield, 2019).

There are 4 types of Employee promotion

Figure 3- Promotion Types

1.Horizontal Promotion -Employees who receive this type of promotion receive a pay raise with little to no change in responsibilities. It is also viewed as an employee's development.

2.Vertical Promotion - An upward movement of employees with a change in abilities and experience is referred to as 'upward development.' This might be a promotion from commercial supervisor to marketing director in the marketing business.

3.Dry Promotion - Employees are unsatisfied with their promotion. This promotion entails a rise in duties and status but not in pay. It means there will be no pay raises or other financial benefits.

4.Open and closed Promotion - An arrangement in which every employee of a company is considered for a position is known as an "open promotion." In a closed promotion, only a few team members are qualified for a promotion.

Benefits of Employee promotion

Figure 4-Benefits

According to a study, 40% of youth expect a promotion in the next one to two years. It also indicates that if they are not provided one, they will leave the company and look for work elsewhere. Employers who fail to meet these requirements risk losing their employees ( Barman, 2021)

Employee promotion is a powerful tool for advancing your career and keeping your best employees. This is because when employees are given opportunities to improve, they are more likely to stay with a company. At the end of the day, this incentive leads to increased productivity.

Employee satisfaction is strongly influenced by employee promotion. It increases employee engagement, morale, and productivity by reducing absenteeism.

Employee promotion is also an effective method for decreasing turnover. High turnover has always been a major issue in all businesses. This problem can be solved by using proper performance reviews and employee promotions.

When an employee is promoted, he or she may be given responsibility for supervising or monitoring the work of other employees. With a promotion, decision-making authority tends to rise as well.

  4. A promotion is viewed as desirable by employees because of the impact a promotion has on pay, authority, responsibility, and the ability to influence broader organizational decision making. A promotion raises the status of the employee who receives a promotion which is a visible sign of esteem from the employer ( HEATHFIELD, 2019).

  7. You have discussed about a very unique and an important topic. In my opinion, a horizontal Promotion can also be called as a lateral move, since it’s a move within the same level, though there is a higher pay raise. Learnt a couple of new points too about the types of employee promotion from your article. Thank you for this nice article.

  8. Promoting employees of management, for example, from the first level to level 02, may bring new talent and ideas to the table and they will be highly motivated, loyal, and may take responsibility quite seriously, which helps the organization in the long run.
